Blog post#2

The Highest Court in the Land

After watching the videos about the Supreme Court I found it interesting how they get 7,000 cases a year but only accept about 100.  This means that so many appeals never get heard I would be curious to know more about how they decide which cases should be heard and why the ones they choose are deemed most relevant.

One of the most important takeaways from the videos is the fact that our current Supreme Court is tasked with determining constitutionality when our constitution has not changed much in 200 years. Essentially our modern society is regulated by a 200-year-old document. if not for the Bill of Rights and some important amendments, the court would have the power to keep us from moving forward.

One of the most surprising things that I learned is that just because the Supreme Court decides not to change a ruling that does not mean they've upheld that ruling. When the news reports on the Supreme Court, they often give the impression that because they've decided against changing a judgment it means they agree with that judgment when in fact it just means that they have decided not to decide.

While the videos did not change my thoughts on the Supreme Court, I did find it fascinating that they argue cases in front of each other as if they are lawyers speaking in court. This definitely changed my image of how they discuss and decide on how to rule on cases and it gives me a new respect for how much work they put into each case.
